English-speaking devotees in the Hebrew Roots movement eschew the name of Jesus. They replace the name of Jesus with Yahoosha, Yehoshua, Yahshua, Yeshu, and many other variations. One variant for Jesus’ name used by many Hebrew Roots movement adherents is Yeshua. They have been taught that, as a Jew, Jesus’ actual name in Hebrew should be Yeshua. Jews indeed render Jesus’ name in Hebrew as Yeshua. Although Jews often drop the “a” and call him Yeshu, which is an epithet against him.
A little known fact is that one of the names used for Jesus by the Hebrew roots movement, Yeshu, is used by Jews as a curse against Jesus. Tuvia Pollack, writing for Kehila Times, reveals that “the name Yeshu can be seen as an abbreviation of ‘Yimach Shmo Uzichro,’ may his name and memory be blotted out.” Jesus is regularly cursed in the Jewish Talmud by the name of Yeshu. The Talmud, which calls Jesus Yeshu, as an epithet, is the authoritative religious book in Judaism. The Talmud memorializes the traditions of the Jews. Jesus upbraided the Jews for replacing his laws with their man-made traditions.

The practice of English speakers to call Jesus Yeshua is part of a sinister scheme. It is a devilish stratagem by Judaizers to corrupt the gospel of grace.

When we say that we beleive in Yeshua as the Messiah is THAT the same thing as saying that we believe in “Jesus”?? Yeshua means “salvation”. Yehoshua (the longer form of the Messiah’s Name) means “HaShem Saves.” The name Jesus literally means nothing. It has no meaning what-so-ever.

Christ was born to Mary, a Jew(albeit likely of the Essenes rather than Pharisees or Saducees). Since Jewish tradition holds that a child takes its creed from its mother, that makes Christ a Jew. He went to synagogues, argued with “learned” Jews in the Temple(and won those arguments), and kept the Sabbath, too. When He was accused, none of the Jews could find a single instance of His violation of the Law given Moses, either. He came not to destroy the Law, but to fulfill it, and when He, in His agony on the cross, uttered the words “It is finished,” it was indeed, and the New Covenant in His body and blood became the reality.

Hi Ed, how about the name Yahshua? this seems to incorporate YHWH’s actual covenant name and seems more … legitimate? seeing as though there were names like YeshaYAHu, YirmiYAHu, EliYAHu etc. I guess the question is whether Mary and Joseph called their child by a Hebrew name at all or whether it was the Greek “Jesus” straight out of the womb. i have seen His Name spelled both as “Yeshua” and as “Yahshua” in other ancient writings. Being uncertain of which is the more accurate, i simply use “Y’shua,” which covers both bases.

There’s an article about how the Masoretic text is the primary reason the Jews don’t accept Jesus. “They have pierced my hands and feet (referring to the nails in crucifixion)” became “Like a lion my hands and feet.” The text isn’t even grammatically sound, yet Jews who don’t want to accept Jesus (or who don’t want to question their rabbi) insist it must be so.

In any case, any Bible will tell you that yes, Jesus was Jewish. He celebrated Hanukkah, Passover, and other holidays. His given name was Yeshua bar Joseph, though he was more often referred to by his location name, because Yeshua is basically Joshua in Hebrew. And his name wss common enough that Romans had to ask where he came from.
