  1. “a spiritual deception to hide God from man”

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able?
    –Then he is not omnipotent.

Is he able, but not willing?
    –Then he is malevolent.

Is he both able and willing?
    –Then whence cometh evil?

Is he neither able nor willing?
    –Then why call him God?

    • You have a misconception of God. God is all powerful. He rules and controls all things in heaven and on the earth. For example, God told Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, who was the most powerful ruler in the world at the time, that he would take his kingdom from him for seven years and then restore him to power; God then proceeded to do that very thing. For seven years Nebuchudnezzar was made to eat grass like the beasts of the field; his hair grew long and became matted like feathers, and his nails grew to be like an eagle’s claws. After seven years, God restored Nebachadnezzar to his former greatness. After Nebuchadnezzar was restored to power, he said this about God:

“And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?” (Daniel 4:35)

God has chosen his elect “before the foundation of the world” Ephesians 1:4. You simply cannot accept that God is completely sovereign. You use man’s wisdom to argue against God’s word. You seem to argue that God could not have predestined Adam and Eve to fall because to do such a thing would mean that God predestined evil. God, however, states that he is sovereign, and in his sovereignty he creates evil:

“I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.” Isaiah 45:7.

You blaspheme God by opining that if God causes evil, that necessarily makes God evil. To call God evil is the same as calling God an evil spirit, since “God is a Spirit.” John 4:24. Jesus warned against calling God an evil spirit. “But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.” (Mark 3:29-30)

God’s word states that God is perfectly holy, and at the same time God creates evil. Isaiah 6:3; 45:7. “For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.” Romans 11:36. All things includes good things and evil things.

You have decided that you will not have the sovereign God reign over you. You are like the citizens in the parable in Luke 19. “But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.” (Luke 19:14)

Jesus describes the end of those who will not submit to his reign: “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.” (Luke 19:27)

God states that he creates evil, however, that does not mean, as alleged by you, that God is evil. God is perfectly righteous. “The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.” (Psalms 145:17 AV) God is perfect in his ways, he is perfect in his judgment, he is perfect in his justice, and he is perfect in his righteousness. God is holy. “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.” Isaiah 6:3. There is not one spot of iniquity in God.

“Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.” (Deuteronomy 32:3-4)

The evil that God creates, spoken of in Isaiah 45:7, is defined in the passage through parallelism. God states “I form the light and create darkness.” We see that God has juxtaposed light with its opposite, which is darkness. We see God’s creation of darkness in Genesis.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.” (Genesis 1:1-4 )

The earth was without form and “darkness” was upon the face of the deep immediately upon its creation. Notice what God does next. He creates light, which is the very opposite of darkness. God states that the light was good. He did not, however, say the darkness was good.

God created darkness, which is something which is no part of God. Indeed, 1 John 1:5 states: “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5 AV) Yet, God uses darkness as his secret place. “He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.” (Psalms 18:11 AV) God creates darkness and uses darkness, but there is no darkness in God.

Why is that important? Because God creates something (darkness) which is not at all a characteristic of God. In the same way that God creates darkness, he also creates evil; just as there is no darkness in God, so also there is no evil in God. Jesus created all things. Colossians 1:6. Jesus is: “The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6. God calling himself the Prince of Peace indicates that peace is part of God’s very character. In Isaiah 45:7 God states “I make peace, and create evil.” He parallels that with his statement that “I form the light, and create darkness.” In that same way that God is light and has no darkness in him and creates both light and darkness, God is the Prince of Peace and has no evil in him and creates both peace and evil.

Do we have examples of God creating evil? In fact, the entire book of Job is an illustration of God creating evil against Job. At the end of the book of Job God explains that all Job’s brothers, sisters, and friends came to comfort Job “over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him.” Job 42:11.

How did it all start with Job? It began when God removed his protection from Job and gave Satan power to take from Job all that he had.

“Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.” (Job 1:9-12)

Satan then used his power over evil men to drive them to kill Job’s servants, and steal his camels, asses, and oxen. Fire came down from heaven and consumed Job’s other servants and his sheep. A great wind collapsed the house of Job’s eldest son and it killed all of Job’s ten children. Who created the great wind, the fire from heaven, and who created the wasters and destroyers of Job’s children, servants, and cattle? God, of course. “I have created the waster to destroy.” (Isaiah 54:16 AV)

When Job did not curse God, Satan was disappointed and told God that if he allowed him to strike at Job’s physical health, Job would curse him. God gave Satan permission to strike at Job’s health short of killing him.

“And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.” (Job 2:4-7)

Job was struck head to foot with painful boils. In the end, God healed Job and restored Job to riches beyond that with which he started, including blessing him with seven more sons and three daughters. Job 42:12-13. God knows the end from the beginning and he had a perfect purpose in bringing evil upon Job. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28 AV)

Job is just one example of God using Satan to accomplish God’s ends. There are other bible passages which reveal that God uses evil spirits according to his divine will and purpose.

“Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:” (Judges 9:23 AV)

“But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.” (1 Samuel 16:14 AV)

God has blinded the eyes and hardened the heart of the lost (John 12:39-40) and given them a spirit of slumber (Romans 11:8 ) so that they will not see with their eyes or understand with their hearts and be converted. Paul reveals in his second letter to the Corinthians that God uses Satan himself, whom he describes as the “god of this world,” as the blinder of the lost.

“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” (2 Corinthians 4:3-4)

God used Satan to guide Judas to betray Jesus. In Luke 22:3 Satan entered into Judas, who then conspired with the chief priests to crucify Jesus. Again, when Jesus told John that the person to whom he would give a sop was the person who would betray him, Jesus gave the sop to Judas. Immediately, Satan once again entered Judas, and Jesus told Judas, who was now possessed by Satan, to go quickly and betray him. Jesus Christ was giving Satan his marching orders.

“And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly.” (John 13:27)

Lest one think that the crucifixion was out of Jesus’ control, read what happened in John 18 when Judas came with the chief priests, the pharisees and the band of soldiers to arrest Jesus. Jesus put them all on their backs. He did that to demonstrate to us that he was in complete control of the situation and could have stopped his arrest and crucifixion at any time if he so wished. However, God predestinated Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion, and it happened exactly as God planned it.

“Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.” (John 18:3-6 AV)

While God sends evil spirits, that does not mean that God himself is evil. God is holy and perfectly righteous. God is so holy that day and night, without rest, four beasts proclaim in heaven: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.” Revelations 4:8. The Psalmist further explains: “Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.” Psalms 116:5. It is blasphemy to say, as some Arminians say, that in order for God to create evil, God himself must be evil. See Mark 3:29-30; Matthew 12:32.

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is the prime instance of God creating evil that ultimately works together for the good of them who love God. God placed his hand on Herod, Pontius Pilate, the Jews, and the Romans and moved them to commit the evil act of crucifying an innocent man, Jesus Christ.

“Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.” Acts 2:22-24.

“And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.” (Acts 4:24-28)

Pilate tried to tell Jesus he had complete freedom to crucify him or set him free. Jesus contradicts him and tells him that Pilate could have no power over him to do either unless God in heaven granted him the power. God was in complete control of the situation. The crucifixion of Christ was done according as God willed and preordained it to be done.

“Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.” (John 19:10-11)

      • Thank you for this. This is the one thing I’ve struggled with the most in my belief in The Creator God, no matter how many rational ways I’ve looked at it and countless hermeneutic to explain it all away. I still do but your thorough examination and explanation helps. I will have to read your book. You certainly convinced me of God’s grace (not by works, lest any man should boast) in another book. It lifted a heavy burden that there would never be any real assurance of salvation and at the Great White Throne Judgement, I could still be SOL, so to speak, no matter how fervently I tried…there would be that one sin or screw-up that would bar the gates from entry into the Kingdom.

  2. Plain as the nose on a child’s face. How deeply we have been programmed to see what is not really there and believe the NASA lies from almost since birth. It’s still difficult to grasp sometimes, the brainwashing runs so deep. All the flim flam to suggest we all somehow miraculously stick to earth by a powerful, invisible, unproven force yet somehow we can also “unstick” and move forward. Nothing at all to do with the bouyancy and density of an object, right? No pictures from space of people and buildings upside down.
